I think that some of the sounds in the NATO phonetic alphabet are too soft
especially Sierra, Victor and Delta. In both contesting and dx pile-ups I
have suffered from my call being misheard. I have tried various
alternatives, Sugar Victoria David seems to work but David often comes back
as Tango. A year or so ago whilst driving up the M40 I heard a BBC Radio 4
programme talking about the difficulties with phonetic alphabets where they
mentioned that a UK university has been contracted by MOD to study the
problem and try to produce one or more for different situations. The
requirement for air traffic control is different to that required for
military HF nets (and Hams), and again different to that required for
emergency services they said. I operate a lot from XE and there I use
Santiago Victoria Dinamarca that always seems to work in Spanish. Hi!

How about Hearing Dyslexia. In SSB contests,
I can get the Golf Zero through with the Zulu at the end, no problem. So
there is always this Golf Zero something zulu. But there is always trouble
with Victor Delta in the middle.
Suggestion always welcome
