The only problem that I could imagine would be that seeing your callsign published in the table of results might act as a major boost for a newly licensed amateur - but that is pure speculation......I am 40+ years past the mindset of the newly licensed (ie. I fall into the sad old fart category).
For what it's worth I fully support the line articulated by Steve G3UFY elsewhere that if you can afford any sort of rig, RSGB membership is a small incremental cost.

I "take part" in loads of foreign societies contests of which I am not a
member. Of course non-members can join in the fun of RSGB contests. The
more the merrier. They can take part and compete like anyone else. They
just don't get into the published results table. What's the problem?
