Jim, You can learn a lot about "height gain" if you use the UHF TV coverage 
 predictor programme and run it for various antenna heights.  Select a   
weak A group "DX" tv station and set your ant height at 20M, then drop by 2  
metres each time.  You will soon get a feel for how the signal drops and  
answer your own question.
Try your relatives post codes as well, It's fun to play with.
