Well said Peter (G3LET) and others.

I cannot win from up here (not with 25 watts - please take note G4CLA
!), and hence one of those who certainly doesn't aim to win - but I am
keen to work stations, any stations, because its a great event and
deserves support; I also believe that giving out a few points and
supporting the contest is the aim of the vast majority of fixed
stations who air their calls over the weekend.

If I cannot work G3xxx in Cornwall because we are both S&P then that
is one QSO which will definitely go unheard by a Portable so denying
him/her an opportunity to hear that there are other stations around.
Surely there can be no greater encouragement for portables than to hear
other stations on the band - anyone; activity breeds activity.

I know the Fixed station rule was instigated with the best intent (no
pun in-tent-ed !), but please listen to those outside the populated
areas where, believe you me, a VHF QSO (especially inter-UK Tropo) can
be a real event ):

>I think the point people have made is not that they want to "win"
but
>that opportunities on the V/UHF bands tend to be fleeting and should
be
>maximised as far as possible. Stopping anyone calling CQ inhibits
this,
>as has been pointed out by several correspondents. Turning people
who
>(for whatever reason) aren't able to go /P into second class
citizens
>isn't going to encourage their participation and benefits no-one.
