Perhaps a bit late for this suggestion but I have always thought that
the RSGB 2m Backpackers series are a very good way of learning about
contesting. They require a range of skills but, because of the equipment
restrictions, almost anyone can assemble a station that has the
potential to win. Actually wining them is a different matter as they are
often quite competitive at the top - which is ideal because it gives
newcomers the chance to compete with "experts" with operating skills
being the main differentiator.

All the monthly activity contests are useful as they offer the chance to
analyse performance and see progression in a shorter period than annual
contests allow.

I have long thought that contesting at the highest levels can't be
learned, some people are just good at contests. However, we can all improve.
