I agree. I cannot talk about VHF contests, except 50MHz, but mostly I enter
contests BERU, ARRL 160m, CQWW etc. not to win, I cannot put that amount of
effort in but a)because it' the taking part that I enjoy and b)to pick up
new countries, squares, US states etc.

That is exactly right if you are a keen DX chaser which lots of us 
VHF/UHF enthusiasts are.

Fortunately the end result is the same, the more people that take part 
in contests to get rare squares and work dx results in greater rates 
(and points) for those that want to win contests.
