Mostly so Roger. I remember it of course but there again, I am a G3.
Though not old, not by a far stretch ;-)
599x for eXcellent or more properly for Xtal. "You sound so good, you must
be crystal controlled."
Or more specifically, free of amplitude modulation therefore T9. Free of
frequency modulation therefore without C. Free of clicks K and free of what
hasn't been mentioned yet, D for drift. If your TX was home-made and VFO
controlled and you got 599X reports you really had done a good job.
With modern commercial rigs, T9 tone without noticeable C & D is the norm.
Almost X but for K which it seems, continues to fall through the net.
