[UK-CONTEST] CQWW on CW...

David M0XDF,

Please do try to have a go in CQWW-CW this weekend. As
others have pointed out there only three variables in the
"QSO".

1. His callsign. Many participants will be CQing and
running, sending their call with every QSO. Just relax until
you've got his callsign OK.

2. His zone. This is the "exchange". Once you've figured out
his call, then 99 times out of 100 you've already got his
zone. But again that's something you'll hear repeated over
and over again in each QSO. You'll need to be aware of
"shortened characters" as used for zones. Stations in Zone
09 (Northern South America plus part of Caribbean) send
something that sounds just like "TN" for the Zone. So you
get 599 09 sounding like 5NN TN. This can be confusing the
first few times you hear it.

3. Your callsign. Having spent time listening to a "big gun
station" running stations fast (and there'll be a lot of
them around), you will have deciphered his CALLSIGN OK as
well as the ZONE that he is sending. Don't even attempt to
call him until you are happy that you've already know both
his callsign and his zone. The last bit is to be able to
recognise when he comes back to you. Since you own callsign
is something that you've probably already sent more than
anything else in CW so far, you should be able to recognise
it when it comes back at you.

Don't worry if you fluff the first few, just keep trying.
It's well worth it!

The CQWW-CW is by far the largest and best CW contest of
them all.

Good luck.

Why is there no point in doing so for CQWW? If the op isn't
getting the Sn, then shouldn't you slow down so they can?
Forgive my ignorance, I've not even listened to CQWW yet.
