To address the original point ..surely, unless you have an unusual FT990 it
does have CAT capability!

I couldn't agree more.  I enjoy contesting and in 2008, managed to come 1st
in England in a couple of categories in the CQ WPX CW contest.  Rig was an
FT990, into an Inverted-L.
