For what it's worth, from someone pretty new to contesting and without  
the experience and skills of someone like Roger, who I must admit to  
rather idolising (love the books Roger)
I use SCP, or the Minos equivalent (which really is just previous  
logs) as an aid to turning the beam - not being very good with locator  
squares yet, the location the call was last in helps to zero in on  
them. Sometimes they have moved but generally it's about right.
I must admit to then using it to help identify the call (this is Phone  
mind you) - I won't log it as G4XYZ if I don't hear it correctly, just  
because it's got XYZ on the screen, but having previous locator and  
call together give me some confidence I heard it correctly - if I'm  
not hearing it, I don’t assume. Also, I'm one of those that gives  
reasonable reports and not just 59, but then that's quite common in VHF 
+ contests.
