Hi Graham,
It can be done quite easily through CAT control from a PC. If external boxes are needed they could either be interfaced with the PC for CAT control or a PIC based solution to talk directly to the FT-1000MP's CAT port could be constructed relatively easily. Although the CAT protocol for the 1000MP is a little more complex than the "Plain Text" style CAT commands in newer rigs.
I have some software in development at the moment that will allow the rig to be connected to one PC but have control shared between any number of machines. If you want to look into the software route, let me know and I can provide code examples for the CAT control on the 1000MP

Subject: [UK-CONTEST] External control of main & sub VFO on FT1000MP
I wonder whether anyone assist me in pointing me in the right direction to
enable me to externally control the Main and Sub VFOs on the FT1000MP?
The scenario is that when operating with the "big knob, little knob" set-up,
it's difficult for two operators to access the smallish push buttons on the
front of the radio. It's even more difficult to see the associated LEDs that
identify who has control. I would like to control these VFO buttons from an
external switch box - but not sure how to do it. Any ideas?
