The "standard" ITU-R phonetics some are good and some are poor. I am
glad I do not have Z in my call must be the worst of the lot "Zulu".
When I use phonetics I use what is the best to convey the message to the
distant end.
I note that when I call some one in a pile up using the "standard" I
most often get "YYD?" rather than "G3?". However if I use Germany 3
Yankee Yankee Delta, I get either the full call correctly received or in
about equal measure "G3?" or "YYD?". To my mind Gulf is OK if conditions
are with me but if they are against then "Germany" is much better at
getting my call across. George is too parochial a name for wide
international use (Think about how a Francophone would say "George").
I will only use "standard" phonetics if they are best at doing the job,
which in many cases they are not.
