Thanks Colin and here's me thinking Freenetname was throwing a wobbly.  
Reloaded XP a few days ago, originally obtained from a source which is 
GMT+7.  I got rid of all the default Thai fonts etc, but forgot the easy 
bit!  Atomtime has put me right . . .
