With ref to item 6) I would suggest that cutting out the booze is probably a
good idea too - at least wait until after the contest for the much-needed
pint....

1) Good rest B4hand - in other words everything ready and working at least
24 hours B4 start.
2) Comfortable operating chair.
3) Good artificial light for least eye strain at night; ie avoid the
illusion of too cosy an environment which is sleep-inducing at 0300+
4) Warm (but not too warm) shack.
5) No over-eating B4, during and after - sandwiches/rolls etc to hand.
6) Ditto drinking - large flask of favourite drink to hand.
7) Comfortable ear phones.
8) All controls within easy reach in uncluttered operating area.
Can't think of anything else right now - am sure you will get many more
useful comments.
