[UK-CONTEST] Historical NFD information

Chris,
As far as I am aware NFD has always been CW only.
Phone NFD (by which I presume you mean SSB FD) started out life as "High Power
Field Day" in 1968. This was initially a CW only event with full licensed power
(then 150W input on CW) permitted. As I recall, its main purpose was as an
outlet for those NFD entrants who were frustrated by the (then) 10W power limit
in NFD. But it never really captured the imagination in that format (although I
managed to come bottom in it in 1969) and entrants were relatively few in
number. Accordingly, in an attempt to enhance its popularity, in (I think) 1971
it was made mutli-mode. This had some success, but the SSB component rapidly
wiped out the CW, to that extent that by 1973 or 1974 the rules were changed to
make it SSB only, and it was rebadged
as SSB Field Day, in which form it persists unchanged to this day.
As for VHF NFD, I know it was a well established event by the time I first
attended it in 1966 as a callow youth (this was before I became a callow adult).
I believe it goes back to the mid 50s but am not sure.....no doubt some of my
more VHForiented colleagues can be more precise.
Hope that helps,
73 and happy Christmas to you and yours,
Quin G3WRR

Subject: [UK-CONTEST] Historical NFD information
Hi
Just a bit of research for an article in the local club newsletter. I can
see from G6CL's book that NFD started in June 1933. Am I correct in assuming
this was CW only. Also when did phone NFD and VHF NFD start.
Finally is there an historical archive of VHF NFD results going back to the
1980's anywhere?. I am trying to find out when my local club (Wythall
G1WAC/G4WAC) entered it's first VHF NFD (possibly 1987/88/89).
Merry Xmas to all
Chris G0EYO
