[UK-CONTEST] AMTOR it makes sense !

Hi Alex.
I was active in 1963 on RTTY with a Creed 7B and worked my first 100+ countries using
that machine, accompanied by the 6S auto tape sender, reperf and even a perforator!
However, I am not advocating using those any more! I also had the stroboscope to
adjust the speed change and eventually ended up with two governors. AMtor was used for
quite some time too.
However, times change. 75 Baud RTTY is about the optimum speed that can be contained
within the normal 250Hz IF filter bandwidth. It's more than adequate and in my opinion should
be adopted as an international standard. More Qs, More stations worked in contests in the same
time, more DX worked by DX-peditions etc. Most people use N1MM and the like with the usual
macros ( some of those need attention too! ) so the throughput would be greater within the same
filters.
As for CW software, what's that? My decoder is between my ears!

Neil/ Roger & co
You must of missed the delight of running a creed 7 series.
However a real teleprinter running in the housenot good for domestic harmony..
I used a strobe to set to 50 bds with 50 HZ ac mains
Then winding the governor screw 7 1/2 turns for 45 bds.
Used to use Creed 444,s As made by ITT as data printers @ 75 bds on STC designed large TXE4 exchanges.
You did not need an alarm bell to know u had a fault just ear defenders !
But yes 75 bds a good idea . Or even 150 ?
But feel u would cause absolute confusion. Its hard enough guessing speeds with CW software!
More sensible would to run AMTOR in FEC mode for RTTY contests.
If u want an AMT1 I know of several available ??
Perhaps instead of PSK we could run "Throb" ?
If u ever want to do some tests on higher speed RTTY or other data modes let me know.

Why do we stick to 45.5 anyway? Surely 99.9% of RTTY is now computer
generated so a switch to 75 baud would be easy.

There is paint drying and then PAINT DRYING!!!
PSK is bad enough in contests. I am proposing RTTY move to 75 Bauds. Now
that WOULD liven things up a bit!

Already been suggested Graham; QSP from my Cabrillo file -
SOAPBOX: Another fun session on PSK. How about adding SSTV as a mode too?

Hi All
Usual struggle with PSK last night. Just got a station tuned in then they
disappeared. Quite a few times the station reappeared but on a slightly
different frequency so had retune then they went again before got call, VERY
frustrating. I think a course on the use of NET and AFC is needed by some
stations. Ratio RTTY to PSK was 4:1. 28 RTTY 7 PSK. After the finish, while
my brain was cooling down, I had a ghastly thought, what if the Contest
Committee had another flash of madness and next year decided to combine SSB
with SSTV!!!! now there's a thought, oops maybe I've lit the blue touch
paper.
