  Callum, you don't have to buy a Directory but you might find it enlightening. As well as a list of islands and island groups with prefixes there is 
a lot of information on the history of the IOTA Award scheme, back to the time when it was first thought of by Geoff Watts, then taken on 
enthusiastically by Martin G3ZAY, then Roger G3KMA to make it the world renowned scheme it is today. Not sure if it gives a history of the IOTA 
contest, but I think it was Ed G3SQX who came up with the idea of linking IOTA and a major new UK contest in 1994 approx. From those early days of 200 
or so entries we have seen it grow to the current 2000 or so entries.

Don't whinge. Spend a few quid and enjoy the read!
