I think we have to be clear on the difference between "cheerleading" and
"self spotting".

Cheerleading is often something the station being spotted may well have
not asked for, no knowledge of,
no interest in, but some of the local club members / friends /
acquaintenaces may well think they are
doing the station a favour by repeatedly spotting a station on the DX
Cluster. I freely admit to being a cheerleader for all of the Scottish
Station I could hear in last week's CQ World Wide Contest and spotted
the guys
when I could find them.

I am not convinced that spotting stations in a UK Field Station achieves
any major benefit in said
Contest. The Cluster is supposed to be a DX Cluster amd unless anybody
far off in the world is looking for a particular
Prefix, or a Scottish Station on a particular band, then the vast
majority of DXers will be aggravated
by loads of really meaningless spots, and pay little or no heed to
them. I dont think in this Contest, Cluster Spots
will decide the outcome.

Having said that there is a vast difference between that and SELF SPOTTING.

There are at leaast 18 spots on the cluster giving the spotter as MM3AWD
which is the "other" call of
MM0LID, irrespective of any other calls on the cluster. I can't but
help thinking that it is extremely unlikely that someone is going to get
out of their bed at 0204 and again at 0433 and again at 0501, to put a
spot on the cluster using someone else's call. Why not use your own
call, rather than put the put the Contest station in jeapordy by using
one of the
operator's calls.

I'm not saying this is conclusive proof of anything, but it hardly shows
the contest station in a good light.

Now, as regards having points docked, I'm not going to comment on the
rights and wrongs of that, the current
Contest Committee must do as they see fit, and all contestants either
abide by the rules or dont take part,
however, surely, it would have been good practise, BEFORE the results
are made public, for the Group to have been contacted,
the position and decision explained, and what is and is not acceptable
practise.

After all, we do bang on about new members and new groups being encouraged.
