GQRP did actually run an award for working the pre-1972 counties during
2008. It didn't get that many entries, and although I had a little
dabble I did't actually enter as the rules stipulated 2W or less (on
80m CW). The main problem I had was identifying what old counties
stations were in - largely QSOs made during the CCs. The GW and GM
counties were the worst in this respect, with counties like Ross and
Cromarty. Obviously for a contest this would be sent as a code in the
exchange, but many newer licencees would have no idea what old county
they used to be in, as many changed boundaries several times.

Good fun for a one off, don't think it would work as a regular contest.
WAB is far more understandable - or SOTA, but there aren't many contest
operators on SOTA summits!
