GM4FAM makes a good suggestion, signing /R would be an ideal move,, we could then take it or leave it. Personally if the call was something rare needed for a band slot such as YS or OA on 80 or 160 I would feel unfulfilled and not satisfied until I had gathered the real deal. Rarity value stands a good chance of being lost if remote operation takes off in a big way and the hobby would be all the poorer for it.

Dave, G3YMC also makes a good point re the CEPT licensing regulations, that should prevent abuse, in theory anyway.

When it comes to contesting, whether the contest rules preclude it or not I very much doubt that we have anything to be concerned about. Can you imagine a serious entry done in this manner. We all know the amount of station equipment work  which needs to be done immediately prior to the event which requires our presence. The wind blows the antennas, apart, rain gets into cables and traps, rotators stick, inside the shack, some things can go pop, get hot, computers don't wish to talk to the rig, so many unforseen last minute and real time things can and do go wrong.. Our man in Helsinki would need someone  in EA8 on the other end of a phone before considering a serious effort but that assistance would be outwith the rules.
