It's to let any build-up of moisture inside the rotator drain away... if the
rotator is sitting like mine on a flat plate, rainwater can seep in by
osmosis... I have to fit a new pot to mine shortly (rotator currently stuck
:-( )

One thing Ron told me to do is to drill a small hole in the base plate. Not
sure what that does, maybe let in fresh air to stop oxidation?
