Those results from the Chilton Ionosonde would explain it! Worst CC conditions I have experienced from here in East Kent. Thirteen of my 27 QSO's were outside G and most G signals were weak. Still fun though!

I monitored the Chilton Ionosonde during the 90 mins of the contest. 
The NVIS MUF was 3.1 MHz or lower. At one point it was as low as 
2.5MHz. It never recovered. At the end, the shortest skip was showing 
as at least 1000km. The worst conditions I have ever experienced in a 
CC contest here in NE Hants. Perhaps stations in northern England or 
Scotland fared better, but I did not hear that many GMs either.
