That is the fun of contesting and teaching others by example. For 
example always work dupes it is quicker. If you do not think you got the 
exchange incorrect ask for a repeat . And do not waffle.

Mind you I find the VHF/UHF contests much worse for waffle and inability 
to contest operate. Personally I just hit the QRZ/CQ button once I have 
the exchange and hope whoever calls is louder.

Ionosphere is easy to fix - wait a couple of months...... Unless you 
live in the far reaches of GM...
