I take your point, but there are often ways to find out. QRZ.com is a 
very good source for that kind of station information, and becoming even 
better as time goes on. If it isn't on a station's main QRZ page, look 
for a link to personal web pages.

But within the UK, the best way of all is to get to know like-minded 
people - and that is best done by *making* opportunities to meet people 
face to face.
