Actually Steve, back in those days it was sometimes very far from 
lighthearted.  Bristol group, who won NFD 3 times in the early 50s, 
were
so  keen to avoid any noise or distraction to the ops in the tent, they
errected a  rope barrier round it and used to have somebody standing
outside to keep  visitors and noisy children (i.e. me) well away.  You
had to promise to be  on best behaviour to be let in for an quick
escorted visit if you were very  lucky. Inside were 4 ops a) the 
running
op b) the mult op Sitting opposite were 2 more ops doing the dupe
checking &  logging.  To ensure silence, a callsign  was written on a
slip of paper and  sjipped down a shute to the other side of the table
and little traffic lights  used to show if it was a goer or not.  Not a
word was spoken. A very impressive set up that I remember to this day.
