There is a very simple way of making the connections so that the SDR is 
protected by the K3.
You need a BNC Tee and two short lengths of coax with BNCs on.
You connect the SDR in parallel to the RX IN Out of the K3 back panel.
When you engage the ext RX using the RX ant on the front of the K3 the 
signal is routed round the coax loop and the SDR on one arm of the Tee.

Tricky to explain in words but simple in practice - works like a charm
