When the ITU ran out of letters-only prefixes, they started with A(number) -
A2, A3, A4, etc. and are now well into the Es (E5, E7, etc.). There are
plenty of Ds - D2 (Angola), D4 (Cape Verde), D6 (Comoros), etc. and these
have all been around for quite some time! Most date back to when the
countries concerned gained independence and needed a nice shiny prefix of
their own. They should, of course, be followed by a second number, as has
been pointed out, when used in amateur service (D68C, D44BC, etc) but not
all administrations are familiar with the usage (having dealt with licensing
folk in various overseas countries, for example in West Africa, many
wouldn't have a clue what we are talking about - amateur radio is generally
quite alien to them, and they do what they understand on a daily basis,
which is licensing commercial transmitters)
