Certainly not off topic Bob.

 

Colchester Contest Group took the decision a few years ago to go the "brute
force" route, and purchased a 10kVA diesel generator.

 

Pros:

 

Diesel is more efficient

No spark plug to create interference

Diesel is relatively safe compared to petrol

 

As a further benefit, generators of this size tend to come with long-run
tanks, fuel gauges and multiple output sockets.

 

Cons:

 

Size and weight

Noise level

Cost

 

It's a super silenced, electric start, water cooled diesel from Stephill.
Silence is relative, and it's not possible to have a comfortable
conversation right next to it.

 

We decided to make the purchase after a number of years of hiring similar
machines. With hired machines we were persistently let down in the field by
equipment that was irregularly (or not) serviced. Failures included cooling
system leakages, split injectors pipes, failed alternators, faulty earth
leakage trips, and most regularly - dirty fuel and clogged filters.

Slightly off topic but I would be interested to hear what portable contest
stations are using in the way of generators and what equipment it powers.
 
My club runs a single radio, Acom 1000 and a couple of laptops.
