Don't forget that in the big completions the leading stations usually
run at least two antennas one a high gain one for working the DX
and a low gain one for working in country, that means that

1) They occupy their channel though out the region.

2) They call CQ (and listen!) in more than one direction at a time.

Of course there is usually switching to select some combination
of the antennas as required to make the contact.

I actually like the idea of a handicap in favour of the use
of low gain antennas in some comps. I notice that with each passing
year fewer of my club have gainy VHF/UHF antennas at home
and this might encourage more of them on VHF.
