Why do you think that is so for data modes? The distortion of even a cheap
£2 USB sound adaptor will be better in terms of distortion, IMD and SNR than
the audio and RF circuits of a SSB transmitter plus the same in the
receiver.
A software defined radio (SDR) is a different thing all together. It is
exposed to a very wide bandwidth and needs to perform with very large
unwanted signals while listening to very weak signals. A data mode demand
from/to a transceiver requires a very small dynamic range and narrowband
signals. Totally different set of circumstances.

Hi Peter
Laptop sound cards are not good enough in most cases for data work. I saw a
report on a dell and it was very bad these were for SDR units but the same
principle.
