[UK-CONTEST] N1MM - USB interfacing

I'm trying to interface N1MM with my L/top and ancient TS850 (TTL) for
use in NFD (no panic then!).
I've run N1MM with the 850 via a com port on the main PC via the IK2BCP
interface for years.

The L/top doesn't have a com port & I've tried various methods of
interfacing USB to
TTL. The off the shelf USB - RS232 converter which I have only provide
5vcc which isn't enough to drive the
IK2BPC interface (the PC com port supplies about 10v). Maybe changing
resistor values in the
interface would fix the problem but I thought that there must be an
easier way.....
I therefore bought a neat little USB to TTL converter from Farnell (FTDI
TTL-232R-PCB).
This sends data to the 850 which generates a response that I can see
with the scope
but N1MM doesn't see. I've tried various combinations of RTS & CTS to no
avail,
it's possible that the FTDI unit it faulty but without buying another
one I can't be sure.

How do others get round the problem of interfacing from USB or has
anyone had any success with one of the FTDI units?
