As I mentioned in an earlier post........ the 2 meetings I've been at in the
last few days were organisations with considerably less funding than the
RSGB. A small outlay on modern equipment and ANY venue with a reasonable
broadband connection makes this VERY viable. Conference centres / hall costs
- that is a case of shopping about. Many venues will donate the halls if
meals, drink, accommodation are being paid for by those attending (this was
the case in meetings mentioned and we were only talking about 10/15 people
at each)
I have farmer customers who can monitor sound / audio from calving pens
anywhere they can get a broadband connection. It's neither rocket science
nor expensive, but it is 21st century! I'm sitting just now watching 13
cameras (each with sound) on 2 separate farms 40+ miles from me. The same
cameras can be viewed on smart phones in the pub, in a mobile (RV) in the
USA when on holiday....anywhere there is a broadband connection
The only barrier gentlemen is ourselves for thinking it's SO expensive when
the costs have not been explored. IP camera technology is very affordable -
ask the farmers (who like paying out even less than radio amateurs do! :-) )

Venues are easy to find. The cost of them might rule them out, though.
Radio amateurs are not known for their willingness to part with commercially
viable conference fees.
