Thanks Clive- in an ideal world it would be great to design and built antennas for DXing and contesting and I'd love to do this given the time, space and finance. The reality is much more limiting and I just have to make the best of my one mast with rotator. Regarding modelling, there is a very detailed description of all aspects of hexbeam design and performance on G3TXQ's excellent web pages (http://www.karinya.net/g3txq/hexbeam/) which makes interesting reading- this was what convinced me to buy the hexbeam in the first place.
So perhaps the relevant question to ask is what would be the best antenna to use for a single band 10m contest entry given a typical situation like mine with a 40ft mast. I originally thought that I might do better with a 4 or 5el monobander, but I'm less sure given Darren's comments about the difficulties encountered with high directionality. The main problems I had in last weekend's contest were a difficulty in copying weak stations from the US and difficulty in working mults to the far east (against other EUs).
Any further thoughts welcome...
