The Bristol RSGB Group normally operates SSB Field Day from a location close
to Bath Racecourse, access past their stables being a requirement. This year
Saturday was Ladies Day - and permission was declined on the grounds of
upsetting the horses (not the ladies!) After trying to secure the use of
other favoured sites we were beaten by the weather not allowing the combine
harvesters in the fields. We had to resort to a flat and rather indifferent
location - or so we thought. Nearly half of the kit was assembled and up in
the air by Friday evening, although there was time to catch the "local"
before closing, to discuss tactics for the weekend.

Working a dozen or so JAs on 28Mhz along with V55 and VU in the first
30minutes was something few of us expected, the 11 element Optibeam at 80ft
doing an impressive job. 14Mhz stayed open for us into the early hours. LF
band QSOs were generally down on last year but 28/21Mhz way up.

Annoying "faults" in the middle of the night put us off air for what seemed
like an hour (actually 15mins), dubious patch leads, multicore cables and a
faulty SWR meter not helping fault finding. Equipment was the usual FT1000D
/TL922 /Optibeam/ Dipoles and 40m Vertical, assisted by DXCluster and
Wintest.

A fun weekend with lots of helpers putting up and taking down in the dry!
