[VHFcontesting] Re: [WSWSS] QST contest results

Interesting idea, although the glossy paper that QST
is printed on might give a smoother finish.

That aside, does anyone else thing that the contest
write-ups in both QST and CQ are pretty poor? CQ just
goes through and reiterates the top 10 boxes in text
format. I can look at the top 10 boxes and don't need
to read their write up.

QST gets cutsey and tries to compare the contest to
baseball, drag racing, or Santa Claus, but then do
essentially the same thing as QST.

I would like to see a contest write up discuss
propogation for the contest, which they will mention
when it is extremely good or poor during the contest
phase. I would like to see them discuss equipment and
antennas used by the winning stations. Or how about
operating strategies (although some stations might not
wish to reveal these). For example, some of the multi
stations in the VHF contests will work 60 or 70 grids
on 6 meters when there is no eskip to speak of. How
do they do this? Use meteors and WSJT? These are the
things I would like to see discussed.

Other human interest stories would also be neat. How
do the best rovers get it done, and what interesting
experiences did they have during the contest. You see
all sorts of wild things and meet interesting people
while operating mobile or portable. My friend Don,
NL7CO, had one farmer accuse him of irradiating his
cattle while he was roving. That is a classic contest
experience to report.

I realize that the editors can only work with what
they get. Maybe we all need to send more information
to them about our contesting. The soapbox helps a
little, but I would like to see it put into a more
cohesive writeup.
