I have been reading a lot of this discussion. Let me preface my remarks with the following:
o I have not used CU2QSO
o I have read the demo webpage and believe I understand its operation
o I have nothing to do with its creation or affiliated with its author
There seems to be a religious war going on here. Both sides seem to have their beliefs. As an outsider here, let me make several observations.
o CU2QSO is a simplex mode, no digis or repeaters are used.
o CU2QSO to me is the digital equivalent of calling "CQ CONTEST W2EV FN12".
o A computer is necessary to decode CU2QSO, PSK31, WSJT, and RTTY messages.
o CU2QSO, PSK31, WSJT and RTTY are valid digital modes in a contest.
o Many operators use a liason frequency to schedule microwave contacts, just as 10M was used to sked 6M contacts, etc.
o Many operators pass QSOs to other bands either on their liason frequencies or on frequencies used for QSOs and CQs.
I understand the aversion to packet and spotting. I operate most HF contests SOLP and don't use packet. The only time I use packet is when I have to while I am operating at someone else's HF multi-op station. Packet isn't for everyone and it isn't for me. But it exists and as a SOLP contester, I have learned how to use it to my advantage. And if anyone is confused by that, try contesting SOLP sometime. But I digress. I don't use CU2QSO either. To me, it just seems like another way of calling CQ on a common liason frequency. What is wrong with that analogy?
I don't think that 6M is that dead these days that we have to spend so much of our time discussing this.
