My club, WD4OAR, OARS (Ocoee Amateur Radio Society) takes any contest that
they enter fairly seriously. Last year was our first attempt at the
September VHF contest, ang again we would have tried to participate in the
June VHF Contest, but it is too close to Field Day and we take Field Day
pretty seriously, because in 1998 and 1999 we won 1st place 2A TN category,
but we probably could not have done it without 6M and 2m. I think in 1999
we had nearly 400 Q's on 6M & 2M combined. Our group considers Field Day
the "have to" event for the year with the Sept VHF contest coming in next
just because "everyone" (regionally, club wise) does Field Day. This year we
had to weigh the odds and decide to work either FD or the June VHF Contest.
It was a hard decision, but we chose FD. We will be active in September
though, with a bigger and better setup than last year and will be portable
on a mountaintop in EM75 somewhere in the Tellico area (SE TN or SW NC).
The September contest is the one that I coordinate as the VP of the club.
It is my favorite contest because of the usually good weather for portable
operations, even on the mtns of the SE. I can't wait for September!!!!
