The Rochester VHF Group periodically runs a 1-day "VHF Academy".  There is no 
cost for the event, the club provides a pizza/salad/pop lunch and gives a 1-year 
membership (with subscription to the club newsletter) to each participant (open 
only to non-members).

It pays off nicely, and is well worth it.

'nuthin keeping other clubs from doing the same.
