As past chairman of the RVHFG, I can certainly vouch for the effectiveness
of this program. All it takes is a morning/afternoon, some folks willing to
make a presentation on a VHF-related topic, and some place to do it.

We had one, where there were 18 attendees - and of those we've successfully
retained 3. 16% doesn't sound like much, but when those 3 bring a friend,
and tell others about the program - it does tend to snowball over time.

Mentoring / Elmering at the local level is the ONLY way to ensure any future
growth in Contesting - and in the hobby as a whole. The ARRL does try to
help, but it's really NOT their domain. It's yours. Discussions on email
reflectors help with ideas - doing stuff in real life is what makes it
happen.

The Rochester VHF Group periodically runs a 1-day "VHF Academy". There is
no
cost for the event, the club provides a pizza/salad/pop lunch and gives a
1-year
membership (with subscription to the club newsletter) to each participant
(open
only to non-members).

It pays off nicely, and is well worth it.

'nuthin keeping other clubs from doing the same.

Ev, W2EV
