WOW!
Thanks for all the responses and in under an hour (direct as well as through the reflectors).
(I guess "we" were in need of another topic to address!...on the VHF Contesting reflector anyway.)
To repeat, the unit with which I am experiencing this interference is a Garmin GPS V.
For some more detail, the 'interference detector' is an FT-736R and the 'usual' location of the GPS is on the dashboard of my pick-em up (on a beanbag 'mount') running from a combo CLA/Data cord (though I am not presently using the data port...still not comfortable with trying to run a laptop from the mobile/rover set-up). I am using the 'attached stubby' antenna.
Several others also reported noise floor rises on 2m and 70cm when their GPS units were turned on (and in radios other than FT-736s) so this may be a 'general' problem rather than specific to 222.
No, I have not contacted Garmin directly (was kind of hoping that someone at Garmin was a VHF enthusiast and might be reading the reflectors...thought the 'direct route' IS probably the best). Paul, ND2X/5, reports that he DID contact Garmin about a GPS V and that they told him the GPS V was a known noise problem...Paul ALSO reported that his GPS III+ is dead quiet and he's been told that the 76C is dead quiet as well.
ANOTHER thought/question that I've had (since posting) is if an active antenna might reduce the noise...since there is an amp trying to force the signals in the opposite direction of any signals that might radiate and 'hoping' that the 'reverse gain' of the active antenna 'amp' would sufficiently attenuate such spurious.
Again THANKS to all who have responded so far (and to those who may still respond).
Maybe to keep this from getting out of hand in terms of traffic on the reflectors...consider replying direct to me (rather than 'blasting' one or both reflectors) and I will again summarize the responses I get.
