Excellent points, Dave. Indeed, what's the element of competition in VHF contesting? Some of the responses on this thread make you wonder why some folks look down on an Echolink contest. :-)
The term "VHF Contesting" is a misnomer in a world of chat rooms, skeds, position reporting, contacts arranged by phone, etc. They really should call it an operating event, just like Field Day. Maybe handicaps should be introduced, 10 times the Q score if you don't have a cell phone nor internet access, 5 times when you're on dial up, 2 times when you have high speed internet, but Parental Controls don't allow for chat room access... :-)
