[VHFcontesting] assisted class

Hi James,

Yes I think it does mean assistance to them, and I also understand your
spirit of well-meaning too. If they are trying to operate unassisted, it
makes a tough situation for them.

One of my favorite contests is the ARRL 10M and I have always operated it
single-op, unassisted. Over the years I've made friends there who yearly
stop by to chat. I look forward to that too. They know I am seriously
operating the contest and would sometimes stop by my CQ freq to offer help
by letting me know that they've, say, just heard an African multiplier on a
certain freq. It is a delicate situation, but I've been able to thank them
and say I am running unassisted so cannot use that info. Does it impact my
later decision on when to stop CQing and when to go searching? Probably. Has
it hurt our friendship to decline their kind offer? No. In the end one has
to decide what is right. I think it was K5ZD in his contesting ethics
presentations who recommended the question "If someone was there watching
you, would you still do it?".

Just as a food for thought here, would ASSISTING another station that you
here by telling them that they are being called by a station they don't
hear, but you do, is that ASSISTED? If so, I am guilty of all charges!!!

I have a number of times let another station know that there is a rover or
another station out there and tried to help by letting them know that they
are being called or by just letting them know that they need to point their
antennas in such and such direction on that frequency to make that contact
and to listen as I vacate the frequency to them and go hunt and pounce or
call CQ!

Do any of you do that to make the contest a little more lively and
competitive?
