Terry,
The work that Kevin spearheaded as part of the "VHF Distance Scoring" Yahoo group is designed to provide information and a sample framework for sponsors to analyze as they design their OWN DX-point scored events.
It contains recommendations based on a combination of log analysis and on-list commentary.
There is *nothing* binding about any of the statements in the study, however sponsors (and potential sponsors) would do well to carefully analyze the information contained therein to assure that the caveats that Kevin and the group uncovered are addressed in the events that they wish to sponsor.
One example of a DX-score based event that is not in full alignment with the initial recommendations is the recently announced WSJT contest. Unless I've understood something incorrectly, they seem to weight all band-QSO's the same, yet provide a block of bonus-points for higher band QSO's. Additionally, they chose a mile-based (rather than kilometer-based) scoring system and cited their own mile-based calculation schema as the authority for calculating DX. Bravo! It is *their* contest. :)
*None* of that is bad, it simply illustrates the "opening" of VHF contesting to a more diverse set of rules.
