The good news is that you cannot go wrong either way - 222 or 1296.
However, having to pick only one, I would give the slight nod to 222
because:

*  You can work aurora nearly as well as you can on 2m (when we have sun
spots again !)
*  You can work meteors too, but it is more difficult.
*  If you are interested in roving, it fits into the limited rover category
of 6, 2, 222, and 432
*  Again, from a rovers perspective, watt-for-watt it usually has the best
signal strength of all the VHF bands - usually better than 2m.
*  Depending on where you live, its easier to find some FM activity than on
1296.   Make sure that you can cover 223.5 FM.

As a rover 222 is my favorite VHF band.  It works very well and its lots of
fun.  I usually run 120 watts and a 6' boom yagi at about 10'.
