Because using APRS info from your computer is considered "assistance".  Sine there is no "assisted class" in VHF contests (unlike HF contests) this makes you a multi-operator station - you plus internet.

It says right in the rule that rovers can use APRS..

the only limitation is that the tx call and grid only, they cannot use 
the "instant" messaging features and stuff like that..
