Be careful....only a select few Yaesu rotors have DC motors in them. 

Most have 24 VAC motors and cannot be easily modified to run on low voltage
DC !!
Examples of the more popular models with AC motors are G-400RC, G-450A,
G-650A, and G-450XL.

I would think the simplest approach for rovers running a conventional rotor
from a 12 Volt source would be to acquire an AC 12VDC to 120VAC inverter.

I just learned the answer to your rotor question myself:

The Yaesu rotors will work on 12 vdc after modification. The mod involves
removing the ac supply, which provides 20 vdc. That supply is replaced with
a DC to DC converter. The one I've seen used is the 12 to 15 vdc model
available from DigiKey.

The rotor runs a little slower but otherwise works fine.

It's good practice to place the converter inside the rotor control box to
minimize radiated noise, run the supply and return leads with a few loops
through a couple of torroids also inside the box and fuse the DC
appropriately. Isolate the DC output return from the converter from chassis
ground.
