I just found my logs & detailed Soapbox Comments for ARRL Sept 1986 VHF Contest & Article for the NE VHF Assoc. I can forward jpegs if anyone desires to see ancient history.Was QRV on 6: 11grids& 21Q/ 2: 26grids & 100Q / 70: 9 grids & 20Q with modest power & small yagis. Best DX Buffalo, NY; loudest intermod: W1WHS, W2SZ, K1TR; worked NJ on 2m with 1/4 wave ice covered whip; weather: west winds 60-90mph, temps 33-25F; 2 heavy rain squalls Sat. nite; 1" rime ice from clouds by daybreak

As one of the old farts, i’ve done both Mt Washington & temperature inversions from NC as well as from SoCal.

Many decades ago, i got special permission to operate the Sept VHF contest from the peak of Mt Washington AND stay over night in my car. As i remember, i probably did 6/2/70. When i woke up on sunday morning, the whole car, masts, & yagis were covered with an inch or 2 of rime ice. Needless to say, even with heavy down sleeping bag, it was BRrrr cold all night. As i remember, qrm was manageable. If you’d really like my data, i still have log & entry in my files! (I specifically did NOT have permission to bum heated sleeping room with the MWObservers.)

Temp inversions:
>From Elizabeth City, NC: south to orlando, fl; north to nova scotia; any little evening enhancement made signals up Ches. Bay LOUD to bwi & phl all year long.

>From LA & Ventura counties, CA: handhelds in duct from SanDiego have booming signals; if above duct: too bad No QSOS on 23 cm to san diego.
