I am no propagation expert but does not the geomagnetic equator across
Chile, i.e. grid field FH and not grid field FI Educator?

Since the equator runs through Ecuador it can't be TEP I'd think. That day
we pretty much only heard stations from Ecuador and not much at all from
neighboring countries, which is what I would expect if F2 propagation would
be involved. I'm inclined to think it was multi-hop Es.

Audio clip of HC2AO from March 12th 6M opening. 
It was open to quite a bit of South America including VP8. 
The HC's were exceptionally strong, which leads me to believe F2 may have
been involved besides TE.
