Subject: [NEWSVHF] 222 MHz Activity Night

>
Hello VHF friends,

The 222 Activity Evening governing board has let it be known that this
Tuesday promises to be a red letter day and to celebrate the event  they
have pledged to provide an all expense vacation trip for anyone who is
able to make 20 contacts on Tuesday on 222 MHz. All modes are
applicable. You need only exchange your grid square. I noted that Good
Buddy Ron, WZ1V, made 52 contacts on 222 over the weekend. That number
was about half of the 144 QSO total.  Not too shabby!!  Twenty contacts
on 222 is possible for many to achieve, but it requires all hands on
deck to make it possible. If we all make an effort to get on the band
this evening, that 20 contact total will be achieved by many. We have to
take advantage of this fantastic offer!

Now about that all expense paid tourist adventure.  It is a fun filled
excursion to the Cernobyl region of Ukraine in mid winter. You and your
lucky travelers will depart New York City on the Liberian flagged
freighter "Monrovia". This ship was built in 1913 in  Gabon and has
spent many years in the guano trade before it was converted into our
ocean going home away from home. We will travel from New York to
Murmansk in Russia well above the Arctic Circle. From there, we will
Eco-Tour on foot to Cernobyl. Once there, we will spend time at the new
radium hot baths within sight of the large concrete dome over the de
commissioned reactor.  We will enjoy our stay in Pripyat City located
near Cernobyl at the abandoned local hospital.  You will enjoy tours of
the sports facilities and cultural centers located there within the
inner exclusion zone.  As an added option, there is a planned tour of
the Woodpecker OTH radar installation located nearby. A piece of
radioactive steel girder will be given to each attendee as a memento
that you can carry back to Murmansk.  At the end our our stay, we will
all celebrate at a banquet at the reactor in our honor. The main course
will be boneless whitefish caught from nearby cooling ponds. Due to the
conflict in Ukraine, all trip members are required to sign a waiver for
personal injury. The tour sponsors will provide flak jackets at no charge.

I will try to be on 222 .100 MHz a bit before 00:00 UT. The weather has
warmed up a bit from single digits and will be just above freezing I am
told, so it will be fun to walk up the road to the VHF shack this
evening.  I am not sure how much diesel fuel is available, but I have
enough for about two or three more Tuesday nights. After that, I am
hoping the road opens up. I could run on solar power, but have no heat
in the shack! That does not seem good.  So lets see if we can make the
Tuesday after the January Contest a rip roaring success. Who knows, you
may win a fantastic winter vacation?
