Rick, thanks for passing along this sad news.
We are losing our best VHF-UHF ops at an exponential rate lately.
Can't say enough good things about Marshall with all the
encouragement and help he gave the VHF and up communty
over the years. Hardly a contest gone by we didn't work on 6M.
RIP Marshall.

> I knew Marshall because we both lived in Lubbock, TX back in 1971-73 while I was in the USAF at Reese AFB. He was WA5UNL back then and his son was just 2 years old and running around the house. We were both members of the Caprock ARS at the time and he had a pair of 4CX250's that he fed to a quad of 2m Yagis that was able to reach other 2m ops in Dallas. We reunited years ago when the EME Conference was held in Dallas and he had started to build up his VHF & EME stations. I worked his station a few times on 6m, but we never were able to get together at the same time on the moon. He worked to make that station try to beat the W2SZ and W3CCX perennial high scorers in the ARRL June VHF Contest. They helped outfit a rover station or more to assist with getting the multipliers needed to get the score up in the sparsely active grids in the southwest. They buffed up their scores with EME QSOs. He was certainly a driven ham op and hopefully his legacy station will continue to be a VHF & Up beacon from EM31. RIP Rick K1DS

> It is terrible news. Marshall was a good friend to many of us. We would meet at the various conferences once or twice a year. Many years ago Mike, WB2RVX and I purchased a pair of matching 5 and 10 GHz systems from him when he decided to scale back his station. I'm not sure if Len, N3NGE ever met Marshall, but every time I'd see Marshall he would complain of always losing to Len in the Multi operator category every contest. It wasn't until Len scaled back that K5QE took some first place scores in the competitions. Marshall was always a good sport about the matter. One thing for sure was that we, up in the NE, could always count on getting EM31 in our logs on many bands due to Marshall's diligent quest for more grids in the log. If you didn't work off the moon, you could surely get him on meteor scatter. He is in my log dozens of times in the past 25 years. He will be missed.

While maintaining the group may be possible, I suspect matching Marshall's intense drive and passion for VHF operating and contests will still be difficult to achieve. He will be missed by all.
